I hear the buzz and I read a lot of articles about color, and how people are adding more of it into their lives. I tend to agree with all of those, but when I read that people are actually adding more color to their bigger ticket items in their homes, I hesitate because I don't see that at all with my clients. Most of my clients feel that they would rather add or change color down the road with everything BUT the higher ticket item.

I agree people are getting braver with injecting color into their world thanks to HGTV, magazines, design stores, and other people around them. With paint and pop of color accessories, it's been an easy and inexpensive way for people to introduce more color into their lives, knowing that you can always change those out for minimum cost.

When you go to buy your next new sofa, will you still seek out a "safe" color such as beige or will you choose the color you love that may not be so safe, such as a blue or purple even?

Both of my sofas have color and lots of pattern which I love, but in order to add much more versatility to my decorating, I would totally play it safe next time around and add color with accessories. I love change, so lots of pattern and color in a larger piece limit the ability to change and inhibits creativity a little bit.

I say exactly what you've said above to my clients that are considering purchasing furniture {sofa's anyway}. I tell them to go neutral and bring in color and/or pattern with pillows and throws. Those are inexpensive enough to change out when you tire of the color or pattern ~ the sofa is not. I made the mistake of buying a patterned sofa with a dark blue background about 15 years ago. By the end of the week, I should have my white slipcover on it.
I stick with neutrals (safe) colors on big ticket items. However, I would like red for my next W/D. And car. vrrooom vrooom
I agree with the neutral and adding color with accessories.........good to hear that others think the same way. Such gorgeous decorative pillows around to purchase or not hard to make for those so inclined! :)
I recently purchased a sofa for the family room and went with a neutral pattern with lots of texture. This choice is based on three dogs which enjoy sleeping on the furniture. My formal living room sofa has a neutral base color with a deep red toile pattern but the room is blocked from the dogs. This piece is striking from the front window and really makes an impact.
You only live once.... I'd go with a colourful sofa :-) Actually, we bought an orange sectional for our loft. We weren't looking for orange, but it was a great piece at a great price, and we couldn't pass it up :-) Of course, now I need to figure out how to decorate the loft around a big piece of orange furniture!!

I have both a neutral sofa (in my family room) and a patterned sofa in coffee brown, pomegranate, artichoke, and golden yellow. Having both is the best of both worlds. But it is true one tires a lot quicker of pattern than color!
I have beige sofas in my living room... blah, blah, blah. However, I have a patterned blue plaid settee in my office that I love and was pretty pricey to have covered. Of the two that I'm loving more? The plaid settee. I think my next living room furniture will be of the type that I can make (or have made)custom fitted slip covers so when I change my mind (like I tend to do) I can change them as well. Colored pillows just doesn't cut it.
